NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin head football coach Mike Santiago announced today the signing of Royal Gill to a national letter of intent to play football and continue his education at Stephen F. Austin next fall. Gill joins a class of fourteen other student-athletes that will enroll at the university and play next fall for SFA.
Gill, a 6-5, 200 pound quarterback from Eagle, Idaho, helped lead his high school team to an undefeated season and a state championship as a senior. Over his three year career as a member of the varsity team at Eagle High School, Gill made 28 starts, leading his team to wins in 24 of them. Gill completed just under 56 percent of his passes in his three year high school career, throwing for 6,409 yards and 48 touchdowns.
As a senior in 2001, Gill completed 64.4% of his pass attempts for 2,566 yards and 20 touchdowns, leading Eagle to an Idaho Class 5A state title. Gill was also a team captain on the team and was also named a First Team All-Conference selection. He also appeared as a Shriner's All-Star game selection and completed 14 of 18 pass attempts for 190 yards and three touchdowns.
Gill will join quarterbacks Matt Williford, Michael Williams and Zeke Dixon in the Lumberjack backfield in 2002 as the search begins for a replacement for three year starter Wes Pate. SFA opens spring practice in mid-March and will open the 2002 season August 31, against Portland State.
