Track & Field Heads Back to Houston

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams will continue the 2002 indoor season Saturday at the Houston Indoor Invitational, in Houston, Texas, at the Athletics and Alumni Center Fieldhouse. The field events will begin at 9 a.m., with the shot put. The track events will started at noon with the 5,000 meters. The invitational will consist of a 13-team field, including meet-host Houston, Abilene Christian, Baylor, Louisiana-Lafayette, New Orleans, Northwestern State, Rice, Sam Houston State, SFA, Southern Mississippi, Texas A&M, Texas Southern and Texas-San Antonio.
Stephen F. Austin has three athletes that currently rank among the tops in the country. Senior pole vaulter Adam Keul (Tyler, Texas) is currently listed sixth in the nation with his vault of 17-feet, eight inches. That mark also places him at the top of the Southland Conference standings. Senior Misty Ballard-Swan (Carlsbad, N.M.) is 27th in the nation with her mark of 12-7.50 in the pole vault. That mark also places Ballard-Swan at the top of the SLC standings. Senior Destine Rawls' (Houston, Texas) throw of 50-5.50 in the shot put currently places her 24th in the nation.
Junior Jessica Claiborne (Spring, Texas) was named SLC women's athlete of the week for her efforts at the Houston All-Comer's meet. Claiborne set personal and school records in the long jump (19-1.50) and triple jump (39-8.75) to receive the honor.
The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team's next competition will be Friday Feb. 15 through Saturday Feb. 16, at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships in Houston, Texas.
