PLANO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team placed three players on the Academic All-Southland Conference team announced league officials Tuesday. Seniors Sunni Williams (Houston, Texas), Angie Wood (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Joanna Benestante (Houston, Texas) earned the honor.
Williams closed out her SFA career becoming the sixth Ladyjack to record 1,000 assists in a career. She finished the season with 1,560 assists, which is the fourth-best single-season total in school history. Williams was a 2002 All-SLC honorable mention selection and was also named SLC Volleyball Student-Athlete of Year.
Benestante earned second-team honors. She recorded a career-high 343 kills this season as well as being among the team leaders in digs. Benestante earned SLC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 12, for her 35 kills, 39 digs and five blocks over a two-match span.
Wood received a third-team selection. She finished second on the team with 499 kills as a senior and was among the league leaders with her 3.72 kills per game. Wood became only the ninth Ladyjack to record 1,000 career kills. She concludes her career seventh on the SFA all-time list with 1,250 career kills. She was also an All-SLC third-team selection.
The Ladyjacks join Southeastern Louisiana as the only two schools that had three players on the all-academic teams.
