NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team picked up its 18th victory of the season Tuesday night defeating Rice, 3-2 (20-30, 30-23, 22-30, 30-22, 15-12). The Ladyjacks are now 18-10 (.643) overall this season.
It was a back-and-forth affair in game one that saw Rice pick up the 30-22 win. The back-and-forth theme continued through the rest of the match as the Ladyjacks pick up a 30-22 victory in game four to force the match to the decisive game five. SFA rode the back of senior Angie Wood (Houston, Texas) who recorded 23 kills, 13 digs and four total blocks.
The Ladyjacks jumped out to an 11-5 lead in game five before the Owls fought back to tie the game at 11, behind Rebeca Pazo's 21 kills. But the Ladyjacks didn't back down, scoring four of the next five points for the victory.
Senior Jennifer Wilson (Friendswood, Texas) had an off night offensively, recording only five kills on 19 attacks, but what she lacked offensively was more than made up for on the defensive end. Wilson finished with a match and season-high 10 blocks.
Sophomore Joanna Benestante (Houston, Texas) added 13 kills and eight digs.
"The whole atmosphere of this match was different," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "We came out and played disciplined and patient volleyball. We didn't start out game one great but we did some good things that we could build on. We've played in a lot of five-game matches this year so this was familiar territory for us. We just continued to fight all night."
The Ladyjacks return to Southland Conference action Friday against league-leading Texas-Arlington. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Admission is free to students.
