NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Nine members of the Lumberjack football team have been named to the 2002 All-Southland Conference football team. Three earned first team All-SLC honors, while six others were named to the second team unit. Four others earned honorable mention honors, bringing to 13 the total number of SFA athletes honored in a vote of conference head coaches.
Port Arthur freshman running back Tony Tompkins was voted the Freshman of the Year in the conference and also earned second team all-conference honors at running back. Tompkins ended his freshman year with 688 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns. He also caught two touchdown passes and scored another touchdown on a punt return. Tompkins was second in the SLC with his 13 total touchdowns.
Senior Anthony Dingle earned first team All-SLC honors in 2002 after leading SFA with 42 receptions for 573 yards and five touchdowns. It marks the second straight season Dingle has earned first team All-Southland Conference honors. Dingle was second in the SLC in both receptions per game and receiving yardage per game for the year.
Greg Barnum, a senior from Killeen, was also named to the first team offensive unit at center. Barnum lived up the preseason billing as one of the top centers in the nation and helped SFA?s offensive line improve tremendously. The 'Jacks allowed only 12 sacks in 2002, down from 38 sacks allowed in 2001. The team also improved its rushing totals by 44 percent, from 92.0 yards per game in 2001, to 166.0 yards per game in 2002.
Jasper junior Brent Hafford was the only member of the Lumberjack defensive unit to earn first team honors after leading the team with 113 tackles and leading the Southland Conference with 16 passes defended. Hafford finished the year as the leading tackler in Southland Conference play, averaging just over nine tackles per game in SLC games.
Joining Tompkins on the second team offensive unit were Lufkin senior, Courtnee Garcia and Kemp junior, David Phillips. Garcia was the team?s second leading receiver with 36 catches for 613 yards and one touchdown. Phillips was an academic All-SLC selection in 2001 and is a strong candidate to repeat that honor in 2002.
Three more Lumberjacks earned second team All-SLC honors defensively with linebacker Aubrey Brisendine leading the way. Brisendine finished 2002 as SFA's second leading tackler with 86 total tackles and also led the team with 13 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. The Nederland senior also intercepted one pass, forced a fumble and added four pass break-ups.
Austin senior Walker Molinare was also named to the second team defensive unit after finishing the year with 35 tackles and five tackles for a loss. Molinare was one of the SLC?s leading tacklers among defensive linemen.
Braxton O'Banion was named to the second team unit after finishing the year with 12 passes defended. The Houston senior was second in the category in conference games with nine passes broken up in conference games.
Four other Lumberjacks were named honorable mention All-Southland Conference. Zeke Dixon, a freshman from Westlake, La. garnered votes after starting the final four games of 2002. Joining Dixon were linebacker Michael Adams, running back Gary Allen and cornerback Jamaal Cato.
