The Lumberjacks play their final home game of 2002 this Saturday when they play host to the Demons of Northwestern State in the season finale, set for 4:00 p.m. in Homer Bryce Stadium. SFA will say goodbye to 13 members of the senior class in a pre-game ceremony.
SFA (6-4,3-2) needs a win over the Demons (8-3,3-2) to keep alive any hopes of a possible I-AA playoff bid. An SFA win would also severely damage any hopes of Northwestern State receiving an at-large bid to the playoffs as well.
Saturday also marks the renewal of "The Battle For Chief Caddo," the biggest trophy awarded in college football. Northwestern State currently holds the Chief by virtue of its 31-17 win last season in Natchitoches. The 'Jacks have won two of the last three meetings between the two teams.
For the fifth time in six seasons, the final game of the season has playoff implications on the line as the two evenly matched teams meet up. SFA enters the game with one of the most powerful offenses in the Southland Conference, while the Demons are among the nation's best defensively. SFA's offensive unit is averaging just over 215 yards per game through the air, while Northwestern State is allowed just over 161 yards per game passing, fifth in the SLC.
Among the 13 seniors who will see their final action at Homer Bryce Stadium Saturday are: Tim Hodges, Will Bowers, Matt Willfiord, Gary Turner, Courtnee Garcia, Michael Adams, Aubrey Brisendine, Walker Molinare, Greg Barnum, Anthony Dingle, Braxton O'Banion, Joe Owens and Lawrence Hamilton.
