'Jacks Travel To San Marcos This Weekend

The Lumberjacks go on the road for the final time in 2002 this week as they travel to San Marcos to take on the Bobcats of Southwest Texas. SFA needs to win one of its final two games to mark the ninth time in the past 10 years that the program has posted a winning season.
SFA enters Saturday?s game with the Bobcats looking to extend one streak and snap another. With a Lumberjack win, SFA can for the fourth straight year, post a winning record. A win would also end a streak of three straight losses to the Bobcats in San Marcos. Neither team has won on the other?s home field since a 24-19 win by the ?Jacks, in San Marcos, in the 1994 season. Southwest Texas last won in Nacogdoches in 1991 (31-15).
An SFA win Saturday would also move the ?Jacks road record to 3-2 on the year and mark the first time under Mike Santiago that SFA has won more games on the road than they?ve lost. The Lumberjacks are 9-12 on the road in the Santiago era, posting a 3-3 road mark in 2000. RB Tony Tompkins remains the Lumberjacks offensive catalyst, leading the team in rushing yardage (667 yards), scoring (8.0 ppg) and all-purpose yardage (165.4 ypg). The Port Arthur freshman also leads the SLC in all-purpose yardage and scoring. He is also fourth in the conference in rushing yardage per game, averaging 74.1 ypg on the ground.
This week?s match-up pits the SFA defensive unit, ranked number three in the conference, against a Southwest Texas offensive unit averaging 273.6 ypg of total offense, last in the conference standings. Defensively, the ?Jacks are the SLC?s third ranked unit in total defense and lead the conference in pass defense, allowing an average of 141.2 ypg through the air.
