'Jacks Add Two In Early Signing

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin head basketball coach Danny Kaspar announced today the signing of two student-athletes to national letters of intent to play basketball and continue their education at the university next fall. Kaspar has signed Chris Thompson, a 6-7 forward from Lawton, Oklahoma and Josh Porter, a 6-2 guard from Shreveport, Louisiana to letters of intent to attend SFA next fall.
?Both of these young men have tremendous basketball skills, plus bring with them the other intangibles it takes to be a student-athlete at the college level. Having already signed players like Chris and Josh in November, allows us the luxury of knowing that we are continuing to bring players into SFA that will further strengthen the overall program,? said Kaspar.
Thompson attends Eisenhower High School in Lawton, Oklahoma where he plays for coach Bruce Harrington. As a junior last season, Thompson averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots a game. He earned all-conference and all-area honors following a junior season in which he was named to the all-tournament teams at two different tournaments.
James Knight of the National Bball Recruiting Service rates Thompson as the number 2 high school power forward in the state of Oklahoma and the ninth rated high school senior in the state entering his senior season. Thompson was also a Prep Magazine All-State preseason selection earlier this fall.
The second signee, Josh Porter will be a senior this year at Shreveport?s Southwood High School where he plays for coach Chad McDowell. A three year starter, Porter has helped his team to an overall 57-15 record so far in his three year career. During that span, Southwood has made two playoff appearances, and was the Louisiana Class 5A runner-up last year.
Porter led the team in scoring as a junior averaging 16 points per game while pulling down six rebounds and adding four assists per night. Porter is a two time all-district selection and was also a member of the Louisiana Top 28 team a year ago.
SFA opens the 2002 season next week as they travel to Austin to take on fourth ranked Texas.
