NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team picked up its fifth victory of the season Wednesday night, knocking off Centenary College, 1-0. The Ladyjacks are now 5-6-0 on the season.
It was a defensive struggle early as the game was deadlocked at a scoreless tie through the first 22 minutes of the contest. But it was the Ladies' defense that would crack first as sophomore Sarah Johnson (Fort Worth, Texas) broke the scoreless tie with her goal at the 22:48 mark of the first half. Johnson now leads the team with five goals. Freshman goalkeeper Natascia Michalezki (Calgary, Alberta) made the lead stand as she recorded six saves in her third shutout in the team's last four games. The Ladyjacks dominated the stats, out-shooting Centenary, 21-8.
The Ladyjacks 1-0 victory over the Ladies marked the first time in school history that SFA knocked off Centenary.
"The girls knew that tonight's game was going to be a fight," said SFA head coach Nicole Nelson. "They knew they had to come out and play 90 minutes of good soccer and that is what they did. You could see it in their eyes, they came out wanting to win."
The Ladyjacks return to league action Sunday when they travel to San Marcos, Texas, to take on Southwest Texas. The game against the Bobcats is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
