SAN MARCOS, Texas - For the first time since Feb. 26, 2000, the Ladyjacks had to go to overtime to decide the outcome of a game. It was a back-and-forth affair, but SFA was finally able to put away the Bobcats, 59-57.
It was a defensive struggle that saw 14 lead changes and seven ties but SFA was able to battle its way to a 32-31 advantage at the intermission despite the 8-2 disparity in fouls in the Bobcats' favor. Despite committing 11 first-half turnovers, the Bobcats were able to hang in the game by going 9-of-10 (.900 percent) at the free-throw line.
The Ladyjacks struggled from the field but were able to extend their lead to six points with less than three minutes to play, 50-44, behind senior Latisha Prater's (Cottonport, La.) team-high 13 points and five rebounds. The Bobcats battled back to tie the game at 50 with one minute and 10 seconds remaining. SFA took a two-point advantage when senior Jessica Guild (Flower Mound, Texas) hit a pair of free throws to give the Ladyjacks a 52-50 lead with 13 seconds remaining. She finished the game with 10 points, six assists and six steals. The Bobcats were able to force overtime when Alexis Marshall hit a 10-foot jumper with only four seconds remaining.
The overtime period came down to free throws and the Ladyjacks came through in the clutch. SFA hit 5-of-8 overtime free throws to pull out the victory.
Senior Chaquita Dilworth (Temple, Texas) scored 11 points, pulled down four rebounds and recorded five steals in a victorious effort.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
