Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball coach Danny Kaspar learned late Saturday night that Bogdan Konotsuk, a student-athlete at McLennan County Community College that had signed to play for the Lumberjacks next fall, collapsed during a basketball game Saturday night in Waco. Konotsuk was taken by ambulance to a Waco hospital, where he later died.
"I was informed Saturday night that Bogdan Konotsuk had collapsed and died during a game at McLennan County Community College. What had started out to be a tough weekend with losses to Lamar and Sam Houston, suddenly was put into perspective with the news. I had only known Bogdan for a short amount of time but was really looking forward to getting to know him better and to get the chance to coach him. The news of his death was just shocking to me. Our thoughts and prayers are with the students at McLennan Community College and also with Bogdan's family and friends," said Kaspar.
Konotsuk, a 20-year old sophomore forward from Parnu, Estonia, fell to the floor midway through the first half and was quickly attended by McLennan County Community College trainer Jason Johnson and a nurse in attendance at the game. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered at the scene before Konotsuk was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center by ambulance. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.
According to officials with the MCC athletic department, a memorial service has been planned for the McLennan County Community College Student Center, Wednesday, January 16, at 3:00 p.m.
