Lubbock, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team opened the 2001 Four Points Sheraton/Red Raider Classic against invitational-host Texas Tech Friday. The Red Raiders beat SFA, 3-1 (26-30, 30-25, 30-23, 30-20), at the United Spirit Arena.
The Ladyjacks drew first blood as they jumped out of the gate to take game one, 30-26. But Texas Tech responded by tightening up its defense and surrendered only a .092 attack percentage for the rest of the match. Senior Kristy Rhodes (Cypress, Texas) led the way with 12 kills for SFA.
The Ladyjacks responded against Ohio in dominant fashion, knocking off OU, 3-0 (30-22, 30-18, 30-26), in the evening session. The victory put SFA back above the .500 mark (4-3) for the season.
The key to the victory was defense. SFA had four players record double figure digs, with senior Joci Shaw (Albuquerque, N.M.) leading the way with 21. Junior Angie Wood (Houston, Texas) picked up the slack on offense recording 20 kills on 47 attempts (.289). Seniors Marissa Dorcheus (Houston, Texas) and Rhodes recorded double-doubles for the Ladyjacks. Dorcheus led the Ladyjacks with 44 assists to go along with her 18 digs and Rhodes recorded 12 kills and 17 digs.
"We played pretty well," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "We did some good things all day but we need to become more consistent at doing them during the match. If we can do that then we will be in business."
The Ladyjacks return to the court Saturday to take on Texas-El Paso. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. from the United Spirit Arena.
