Nacogdoches - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team ended a two-match losing skid Friday night with 3-2 overtime victory against Southwest Texas. SFA is now 4-2-0 on the season and 1-2-0 in the Southland Conference.
After falling behind 1-0 early in the match, the Ladyjacks stormed back to score two unanswered goals and take 2-1 lead. Senior Jessica Messner scored the Ladyjacks' first goal while freshman Kendra Cannon netted the team's second.
The Bobcats came right back to tie the match at two on an unassisted goal by Courtney Simek at the 74-minute, 6-second mark. The goal would force and extra period, but SFA would close out the match less than eight minutes into the overtime. Junior Anna Steed netted the gamewinner on a penalty kick to give the Ladyjacks their first conference victory of the 2001 season.
"It is real nice to come out of that match with a win," said SFA head coach Lance Noble. "But we still do not do a good job of protecting leads and that has to change. I'm proud of the girls though. They gave 110-percent effort and never quit, even we were down. It was a great win."
The Ladyjacks return to action Tuesday against Northwestern State. A start time has not yet been determined.
