NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin athletic director Steve McCarty and head football coach Mike Santiago announced today that the Lumberjacks have entered an agreement to play an eleventh football game this season, with Texas Tech University.
The game is set for November 24, in Lubbock, with a 1:00 p.m. CDT start.
"This is a great opportunity for us to take our football team to a Big 12 program and exhibit the style and class for which the Lumberjacks have become known. Coach Santiago and his staff informed the players of the game, and it was met with a great deal of excitement. We want to go to Lubbock and measure ourselves against one of the top programs in the Big 12," said McCarty.
SFA had to cancel a game that was set for September 15 against Northern Iowa, due to the events of September 11, 2001 in New York and Washington, D.C. Northern Iowa immediately picked up a contest against Ball State on their open weekend, leaving SFA searching for a possible eleventh game. Officials with Texas Tech University contacted SFA earlier this week, and an agreement was reached Wednesday morning for the first ever football meeting between the two schools.
Texas Tech is currently 2-0 on the season, and will face Oklahoma State and Oklahoma in the two weeks prior to the scheduled match-up with the 'Jacks.
