Monroe, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team dropped is second-straight heartbreaker, falling to Louisiana-Monroe Friday night, 4-3. The Ladyjacks are now 3-2 on the season and 0-2 in the Southland Conference.
SFA was dominant early as sophomore Sophia Pantazis (Kingwood, Texas) gave the Ladyjacks a 1-0 lead at the two-minute, 23-second mark. Junior Anna Steed (McKinney, Texas) added to the SFA lead with her goal at the 32:10 mark. ULM cut the advantage down to one before the half but freshman Kendra Cannon (Kilgore, Texas) responded with her team-high fourth goal of the season to push the Ladyjack advantage back to two goals.
It seemed as if the Ladyjacks were cruising to their first conference victory but the lead didn't last long. ULM netted three goals within 17 minutes of each other to take the lead and the match. The Indians' Chelsea Shriner netted the gamewinner at the 77:28 mark.
"It was an amazing match," said SFA head coach Lance Noble. "To have two games that have been as well fought as these past two have been and not come out on top in either one is tough. It takes a lot out of you. I'm still proud of this team. We only scored 17 goals all of last season and these girls are hanging in their and fighting until the very end. These past two matches things just haven't gone our way, but if we continue to improve eventually it will."
The Ladyjacks return to action Sunday against Northwestern State. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m., from Natchitoches, La.
