Houston, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team jump-started its season Friday afternoon at the Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational with a 3-2 victory over Houston. The Ladyjacks returned to the court three-and-a-half hours later to take on tournament-host Rice. SFA fell to the Owls, 3-0.
SFA had strong showing from preseason All-Southland Conference first-team selection Kristy Rhodes (Cypress, Texas) as she recorded 27 kills and totaled three blocks in the two matches. Junior Angie Wood (Houston, Texas) followed that up with 24 kills but had 23 hitting errors. Senior Marissa Dorcheus recorded 74 assists while coming up with 14 digs. Junior setter Sunni Williams (Houston, Texas) led the way defensively for SFA with 27 digs.
"It wasn't a bad first day," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "We had our high points and our low points but overall the girls played really well against Houston. Offensively, we weren't clicking against Rice. They are a good team and did a nice job but we didn't pressure them enough and make them earn the tough points. It wasn't for a lack of effort but the execution just wasn't there in the second match."
The Ladyjacks return to the court Saturday to take on Samford at 9 a.m. SFA will follow that up with a 1 p.m. match against No. 18 (USA Today/AVCA Top 25 Poll) Texas A&M. Both matches are scheduled to be held at Autry Court.
