Jonesboro, Ark. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team started off the 2001 season on a positive note Friday night beating Arkansas State, 1-0.
Freshman midfielder Kendra Cannon (Kilgore, Texas) put the Ladyjacks up 1-0 with her breakaway goal at the eight-minute, 24-second mark. Sophomore Sophia Pantazis (Kingwood, Texas) was credited with the assist. Senior Elizabeth Evatt (Plano, Texas) made the one-goal lead stand as she recorded six saves in 90 minutes of shutout action.
"I'm pleased that we got the victory, but I'm not pleased with our overall play." said head coach Lance Noble. "The time of possession favored Arkansas State 60-40. We are a better team that what we showed on the field tonight. We had four MVPs tonight and those were (Elizabeth) Evatt, (Jessica) Negron, (Ashley) Lawrence and (Jessica) Messner. Our defense came out and did a solid job."
SFA returns to the field Sunday to take on Birmingham Southern. The match is scheduled to begin at noon from Jonesboro, Ark.
