NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin head football coach Mike Santiago saw intensity on both sides of the ball Monday afternoon as the `Jacks head into the home stretch of two-a-day workouts. The team will hold two workouts Tuesday before a special teams scrimmage Wednesday to close out fall camp. The team will return to the stadium Thursday night for an 80-play scrimmage.
"I saw a lot of intensity on both sides of the ball. The defense was really flying around with guys really going to the ball. Offensively, we were sharp as well. It's time to play somebody," said Santiago.
Sophomore kicker Ryan Rossner continues to have an impressive fall camp. Rossner nailed several long field goals as practice began Monday afternoon and has shown increased accuracy and distance in his second year with the Lumberjacks.
"Rossner is kicking very well right now, and part of that is due to the fact that the snaps and holds have been perfect," said Santiago. Senior Brandon Louvier (Baytown, Texas) and junior holder Matt Williford (Allen, Texas), have both been very good in working with the kicking game. Louvier served as the deep snapper on punts last season, but has added the snapping duties on field goal and extra point attempts for SFA this fall. Williford takes over as the holder following Ryan White, who held for the past two seasons.
The `Jacks will hold two workouts Tuesday, the first beginning at 8:30 a.m.. In the afternoon, the team will meet for a short workout before breaking for a community function. The team will take a break from the heat of practice Tuesday evening as they gather with members of the community in the annual "Meet The Lumberjacks", scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Fredonia Hotel and Convention Center.
SFA will then hold just one workout Wednesday, then return Thursday evening for an 80-play scrimmage planned for the stadium, starting at 7:00 p.m.
