Ladyjacks Release 2001-02 Basketball Schedule
NACOGDOCHES -- A trip to the Preseason Women's National Invitational Tournament highlights the 2001-02 Stephen F. Austin women's basketball schedule released by head coach Lee Ann Riley Wednesday.
The 27-game schedule gets underway Nov. 9, as SFA opens up the first round of the Preseason WNIT against Florida International (Nov. 9) in Miami, Fla. The Ladyjacks will be Auburn, Ala., Nov. 23 - 24, for the Kroger Thanksgiving Classic. Six days later, SFA travels to Dallas, Texas, for the SMU Hoops for the Cure Tournament where it opens up against 2001 NCAA tournament participant Chattanooga. The Ladyjacks will be in Santa Barbara, Calif., for a Dec. 7 showdown against another 2001 NCAA-tournament participant, UC Santa Barbara. The Ladyjacks kickoff the home schedule Dec. 16, in a non-conference showdown against Arizona.
SFA opens up the Southland Conference play in the William R. Johnson Coliseum against Southwest Texas (Dec. 20) and Texas-San Antonio (Dec. 22). The Ladyjacks will then hit the road for their longest league road swing of the season with dates at Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 29), Nicholls State (Dec. 31), UL-Monroe (Jan. 5) and Northwestern State (Jan. 7). The Ladyjacks have home dates against Sam Houston State (Jan. 12), Lamar (Jan. 14), Southeastern Louisiana (Feb. 2), Nicholls State (Feb. 4) and McNeese State (Feb. 7). SFA hits the road two more time for back-to-back contests at McNeese State (Jan. 21), Texas-San Antonio (Jan. 26), Southwest Texas (Jan. 28), and at Texas-Arlington (Feb. 11), Sam Houston State (Feb. 16) and Lamar (Feb. 18).
The Ladyjacks close out the regular season with three home games against UL-Monroe (Feb. 23), Northwestern State (Feb. 25) with Senior Day being March 2, against Texas-Arlington.
"Playing a tougher schedule is one of the steps we must take to get back into the top 25," said first-year Ladyjack basketball coach Lee Ann Riley. "I think we're excited about the opportunity to play this level of competition. It will show us where we're at and where we want to be by the end of the season. These are strong programs, and except for Arizona, we will play them all on the road."
