The Lumberjacks play host to the Bobcats of Southwest Texas Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Homer Bryce Stadium, in what has turned out to be a crucial Southland Football League match-up for SFA. Entering this weekend's play, SFA is one of four Southland Football League teams with only one conference loss. Two of those teams, Northwestern State and McNeese State, square off in Lake Charles Saturday night in another key conference game. The other SFL game on the schedule this week features the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State going to Huntsville to take on Sam Houston.
SFA needs a win Saturday to keep pace with the league leaders and set up what could be a huge showdown next week in Natchitoches as both Northwestern State and SFA close out SFL play for 2001. Both teams need wins this week to set up what could be the deciding game in 2001 for playoff berths and the Southland Football League title.
QB Wes Pate enters Saturday's game with Southwest Texas needing only 144 yards passing to go over the 2,000 yard mark for the season, becoming the first SFA quarterback since Mike Quinn to top the 2,000-yard passing mark in a single season. Pate needs only 148 yards to move past James Ritchey (5,436 yards) into third place on the career passing yardage list at SFA. The Arp senior would need 1,016 yards passing in the final three games of the season to catch Todd Whitten in second place on the list.
DE Michael Adams will lead the SFA defense once again this week as the Southland Football League Defensive Player of the Week looks to add to his 10 tackle performance against Nicholls State a week ago. Adams also blocked a punt that led to a Lumberjack safety and secured the 'Jacks 23-21 win over the Colonels last week. The blocked punt was the fourth block of Adams' career (three punts, one field goal).
All local firefighters and law enforcement personnel will be admitted to the game free by showing some form of identification.
Game time Saturday is set for 2:00 p.m. Gates will open at 1:00 p.m., with reserved and general admission tickets available.
