NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team got by a scrappy Northwestern State team, 3-2 (28-30, 30-14, 30-14, 25-30, 15-11), Tuesday evening. The Ladyjacks improve to 21-6 overall and 15-3 in the Southland Conference.
The Ladyjacks dropped a close game-one battle, 30-28, but rebounded and looked like they were well on their way to an easy match victory after picking up decisive 30-14 wins in games two and three. Freshman Brittany Burton (Livingston, Texas) stepped up and recorded her best game offensively for the purple and white with a career-high 22 kills and a .462 attack percentage. Junior Jennifer Wilson (Friendswood, Texas) followed that up with a 16-kill (.481 attack percentage), three-block performance.
Despite hitting only .187 as a team, the Lady Demons hung around, led by Christina Stone's 21 kills and 13 digs. But the Ladyjacks regained their composure and put Northwestern State away in game five, 15-11.
"A win is a win," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "It wasn't the kind of performance we were looking for but you're happy anytime you can go on the road and pick up a conference win."
The Ladyjacks return home Friday night for their final two matches of the regular season. SFA will take on McNeese State in a 7 p.m. battle. The match will be played at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Admission is free to students.
