NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team will tipoff the 2001-02 season Tuesday against the Houston Jaguars. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum. It is the third consecutive season that SFA will open against the Jaguars in an exhibition game, with the Ladyjacks winning the two previous meetings.
The game against the Jaguars will be the head-coaching debut for Lee Ann Riley. She returns to Nacogdoches, where she saw success as an assistant coach on the Ladyjack bench from 1992 to 1994. Riley comes to SFA from Missouri where she served as associate head coach for one season helping the Tigers to a 22-10 record on their way to the NCAA Sweet 16.
The Ladyjacks return two starters and seven letterwinners from last season's 26-7, 18-2 Southland Conference championship team that made its 14th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance and 16th overall last season. Among the returnees are 2001 first-team All-Southland Conference guard Nathesia Wright (Arlington, Texas) and 2001 Southland Conference Championship MVP Latisha Prater (Cotton Port, La.).
SFA kicks off the 2001-02 regular season Friday against Florida International in the first round of the Women's Preseason National Invitational Tournament. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7 (6 p.m. Texas time) p.m., from Golden Panther Arena in Miami, Fla.
