NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team got its revenge against Sam Houston State Saturday night beating the Bearkats, 3-0 (30-11, 30-28, 30-25). The Ladyjacks improve to 20-6 overall and 14-3 in the Southland Conference.
For a fourth consecutive match the Ladyjacks jumped out to a quick two game lead behind strong defense. SFA recorded 15 total blocks against the Bearkats and had three players record four blocks (senior Kristy Rhodes, junior Jennifer Wilson and freshman Brittany Burton). Sophomore Julie Goodson (Alvin, Texas) led the Ladyjacks with 11 digs.
Rhodes (Cypress, Texas) led the SFA offensive attack as she recorded a match-high 22 kills (.447 attack percentage). Junior Angie Wood (Houston, Texas) followed that up with 13 kills. Senior Marissa Dorcheus (Houston, Texas) led all players with 44 assists.
"We're happy with the victory," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "The crowd really helped us out tonight. They have been a lot of fun. I think earlier on the crowds might have been a little bigger but now the fans are making some noise and really starting to get into the match and get excited. Now we have to remember that Tuesday's match is just as important as next weekend's matches, and that next weekend's matches are just as important as this weekends were. We have got to go on the road and get a win. Our job now is making sure that our girls are prepared for Northwestern State."
The Ladyjacks' 20th victory marked the first time an SFA squad has reached the 20-win plateau since the 1999 team went 26-10.
SFA will be in Natchitoches, La., Tuesday to take on Northwestern State. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., from Prather Coliseum.
