NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team continued its winning ways Friday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum beating Texas-Arlington, 3-1. The Ladyjacks improve to 19-6 overall and 13-3 in the conference.
SFA looked to be well on its way to another 3-0 victory in the coliseum, as they jumped out to an easy 2-0 lead behind strong defense. The Ladyjacks recorded a season-high 32 blocks, led by junior Jennifer Wilson's (Friendswood, Texas) match-high 10 blocks (nine block assists and one solo block). Wilson was one of six Ladyjacks to record a block in the match.
UTA battled back to cut the lead to 2-1 behind Amber Pack's 14 kills and match-high 22 digs. The Ladyjacks regained the momentum in game four led by senior Kristy Rhodes (Cypress, Texas) and Junior Angie Wood's (Houston, Texas) 17 kills. Rhodes also added 14 digs, six blocks, two assists and two aces. Wood finished the match with four blocks.
"I was very happy with our first two games," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "But I wasn't surprised in game three when UTA made a run at us. We knew eventually they were going to get something going and that is what we were telling the girls during halftime. We kept reminding them to just take care of our side of the court because the Mavericks are too good of a team, they are not just going to lie down or go away. We were a little less aggressive in the third game but fortunately we were able to stay in there and close the door with a good run in game four."
The Ladyjacks will put their eight-match win streak on the line Saturday night in a rematch with Sam Houston State. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
