BEAUMONT, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team shutout Texas-San Antonio Saturday afternoon, 3-0 (31-29, 30-22, 30-24). SFA improves to 23-7 on the season and will return to the Southland Conference Championship match for the eighth time in the last 10 years.
The Ladyjacks outlasted the Roadrunners in game one, pulling out the 31-29 victory. The Ladyjacks never really got into an offensive rhythm, hitting only .218 for the match. But the Ladyjacks defense held UTSA to a .179 attack percentage, recording 15 blocks and 54 digs. Junior middle blocker Jennifer Wilson (Friendswood, Texas) recorded a match-high five blocks to lead SFA.
Southland Conference MVP, senior middle blocker Kristy Rhodes (Cypress, Texas) led the SFA charge with 15 kills, 11 digs and four blocks. Senior setter Marissa Dorcheus (Houston, Texas) led all players with 42 assists, which places her at 5,002 career assists. Dorcheus is only the second Ladyjack to record 5,000 assists for a career (Bianca Aranda - 5,155).
"It was an okay match," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "We didn't play great but you can't really complain when you get the victory. We did what we needed to for the win. We now need to get ready for the championship match tomorrow night."
The Ladyjacks will take on the winner of the Texas-Arlington/Lamar match Sunday. The championship match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., from the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas.
