NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team was defeated Saturday night by SLC champion Lamar, 3-0 (31-29, 30-24, 30-28), at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks finish the season with a 22-7 overall record and a 16-4 league mark.
The Ladyjacks struggled to get their offense clicking in game one, hitting only .161. But SFA made a late run led behind senior Kristy Rhodes' (Cypress, Texas) six kills (.357 attack percentage), to tie it at 29 before Lamar put the game away. She finished her final home match recording 14 kills, 17 digs and eight assists.
The Cardinals were too strong on offense as they had five players who recorded at least eight digs. Lamar was lead by Shandra Zickler and Alison Tuttle, both with 10 kills.
Senior Marissa Dorcheus (Houston, Texas) finished her final home match with a with 36-assists and 16-dig perfomance. Senior Joci Shaw (Albuquerque, N.M.) closed her last home match for the purple and white with six digs.
"The thing that is frustrating about this loss is that we didn't play to the level we had been playing at over the last five weeks," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "Had we done that, then you just live with the outcome. But knowing we just didn't execute as well as we had been is what makes this loss frustrating. Certainly this team accomplished a lot of great things, with a second-place league finish and earning a first-round bye in the tournament. These girls had to battle back from some early season conference losses and I'm proud of them for the way they played. We played great to get here and we gave ourselves a shot at the conference title, it just didn't happen for us."
The Ladyjacks will be the leagues No. 2 seed in the Southland Conference Championships. The Ladyjacks first match in the tournament will be Saturday in Beaumont, Texas.
