NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team beat Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday night, 3-0 (30-28, 30-23, 31-29), at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks improve to 18-6 (.750) overall and 12-3 (.800) in the Southland Conference and more importantly SFA remains alone in second place in the league standings.
SFA seemed to have the match well in hand after jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Freshman Brittany Burton (Livingston, Texas) was the offensive star for SFA recording 11 kills on 23 attempts (.435 attack percentage). She also recorded two blocks, one key block late in game three. But the Lady Lions charged out to an 11-point lead in game three behind Julie Greiner's 11 kills. The Lady Lions were on the verge of forcing a game four until SFA roared back led by junior Angie Wood (Houston, Texas) and her 17 kills.
The Ladyjacks pulled within three at 29-26 in game three before rattling off five consecutive points for the victory. The match was capped off by freshman Joanna Benestante (Houston, Texas) as she recorded her lone kill of the match for the 3-0 victory.
"At this point in the season you don't want to make excuses for your team," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "We have go to go out there and be solid. We did have two hard weeks of volleyball and this is the first mid-week match we've had in a while so it took us a little while to get back in the groove. We're happy with the win but we've got to be ready for our next match. I think we will get to see some exciting volleyball."
The Ladyjacks return to the court Friday night to take on Texas-Arlington. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Admission is free to students.
