San Antonio, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team improved its win streak to six consecutive matches with its 3-0 (35-33, 30-24, 30-22) victory over Texas-San Antonio Saturday night at the Convocation Center. The Ladyjacks are now 17-6 overall and 11-3 in the Southland Conference.
SFA outlasted the Roadrunners in a game one battled that finished with a 35-33 score that fell in the Ladyjacks favor. With their backs up against the wall, down 29-24, SFA battled its way out of a hole behind senior Kristy Rhodes (Cypress, Texas) 22 kills, 10 digs, four blocks and three service aces. It was Rhodes second-straight match recording at least 20 kills and her third time in the last five matches.
The Roadrunners were led by Charlisie Heifrin's 16 kills and .467 attack percentage. UTSA's Stacy Schmidt recorded a double-double as she carded 14 kills and 13 digs. But the Ladyjacks were too strong down the stretch as juniors Angie Wood (Houston, Texas) and Jennifer Wilson (Friendswood, Texas) recorded 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Senior Marissa Dorcheus (Houston, Texas) led all players with her 51 assists. She also recorded her third-straight double-double, adding 16 digs to her 51 assists.
"I'm really proud of our team today," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "We were down 29-24 in game one and fought back to win the game. When we did that I felt like we took the wind out of their sails. We went 4-0 on this long road trip and that is exactly what we had to do but we can't afford to relax. We do have five of our final six matches at home but we can't afford to have a let down."
The Ladyjacks return home to take on Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks have won their last nine matches.
