San Marcos, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team outlasted Southwest Texas Thursday night, 3-2, for its 10th Southland Conference victory of the season. SFA improves its overall record to 16-6 (.727) and its SLC record to 10-3 (.769). The Ladyjacks win streak now stands at five matches.
The Ladyjacks jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Bobcats with strong hitting (.296). SFA was led by senior Kristy Rhodes (Cypress, Texas) and junior Angie Wood (Houston, Texas) who both recorded 23 kills while hitting better than .400 for the match. Rhodes added 15 digs for her team-high 14th double-double of the season. She also added five blocks.
The Bobcats fought back to take game two in a close 30-28 battle. SWT was led by Tiffany Weidner and her game-high 30 kills and eight digs. The two teams split victories for the rest of the match with SFA picking off a 15-12 victory in game five for its 16 win of the season. Senior setter Marissa Dorcheus (Houston, Texas) recorded her second-straight double-double with her match-high 71 assists and 11 digs.
"We are excited to leave here with a victory," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "Southwest Texas is a better team than their record shows and they played a good match tonight. This is a very tough place to play. Kristy and Angie played really well for us tonight recording 23 kills, each. I also felt that our sideout game was really solid and that unfortunately has been the thing that has caused us problems in the past. Our service game was not great but seven aces to six errors is something you can live with. They outblocked us and that is one area where I thought our coverage could have been better. We are just happy to have a day off before taking on UTSA."
SFA returns to action Saturday afternoon against Texas-San Antonio. The match is slated to start at 4 p.m., from the Convocation Center.
