Thibodeaux, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack vollleyball team beat Nicholls State Friday night, 3-0. The Ladyjacks have improved their overall record to 14-6 and 8-3 in the Southland Conference.
The SFA jumped out to a quick lead behind the strong play of senior Kristy Rhodes (Cypress, Texas) and juniors Jennifer Wilson (Friendswood, Texas) and Angie Wood (Houston, Texas), all of whom recorded 13 kills. Wilson led all players with .455 attack percentage.
The Ladyjacks didn't just dominate on the offensive side of the ball. SFA stepped up to record 33 digs and 16 total blocks despite the absence of blocks leader Brittany Burton (Livingston, Texas), who sat out the match with a sore back. SFA was led by Wilson who recorded six block assists.
"Tonight we took care of the basics," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. Overall it was a good match but we did struggle through moments where we made some mental errors, the kind of errors you can't make if you want to be successful in this conference. We got a lot of people involved in the offense and were able to mix it up a little bit."
The Ladyjacks look to improve upon its modest three-match winning streak Saturday night against Southeastern Louisiana. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. from Hammond, La.
