NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin State University track and field coach Phil Olson has announced the signing of three student-athletes. Andrew Cope of Weatherford, Lindsey Bryson of Arlington and Jocelyn Stevens of Schertz have signed letters of intent to join the SFA track program in the fall.
Andrew Cope is a 6-11 high jumper from Weatherford High School. Cope, a four-year letter winner in the high jump, has placed in the top three in every meet since his sophomore year. Cope's list of accomplishments include being named the District 5-5A high jump champion, a regional champion and a member of the Fort Worth Star Telegram All-Metro Team. As the team captain, Cope holds the school record for the high jump. While competing at the state level, Cope placed third as a sophomore and second as a junior. In 1999 Cope placed fifth at the Junior Olympics. In the classroom Cope has excelled as he is a member of the student council and a member of the honors choir.
"Andy will join conference champion and NCAA qualifier Paul Todd in the high jump here at SFA. Paul and Andy will give us valuable points in what has become a very competitive event in the Southland Conference," said Head Coach Phil Olson.
Lindsey Bryson will join the Ladyjacks as a heptathlete. Bryson has been named to the Arlington Morning News All-Area Track Team. During her career at Mansfield High School, Bryson was the District 8-5A champion in the long jump. At regionals she has captured third place in the triple jump and fourth place in the long jump. Bryson holds the school record for both the triple jump and the long jump. In the classroom she has excelled as a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club.
"Lindsey can do so many things well. She is very powerful and quite dedicated. As a heptathlete under Assistant Coach Ron McCown, Lindsey will definitely flourish in SFA's multi-event program," said Coach Olson.
Jocelyn Stevens, a 5-7 high jumper and 43.67 intermediate hurdler, comes to SFA from Samuel Clemens High School in Schertz, Texas. At Samuel Clemens High School, Stevens holds three records including the high jump, 100m hurdles and the 300m hurdles. As a sophomore and junior she was named MVP of her track program. Stevens placed fifth in the high jump as a sophomore and fourth as a junior at state. Continuing her success as a junior, she placed third at state in both the 100m and 300m hurdles. Stevens has been named to the Academic All-District Team.
"Jocelyn is a terrific athlete who we expect to be an impact in the high and intermediate hurdles as well as the high jump. Jocelyn has a great deal of experience which will help in her initial year at SFA," said Coach Olson.
"We are very excited to have Jocelyn, Andrew and Lindsey join our program. They are terrific individuals who we feel will make an immediate impact in the Southland Conference during their first season with us. Assistant Coach Ron McCown had great contact with these three in the fall and deserves a tremendous amount of credit for his efforts in the recruiting process. This is an important first step in our quest for a conference championship and reflects our philosophy of a balanced program," said Coach Olson.
