Beginning in the 2016-17 season, Trey Pinkney begins his first year as the graduate assistant coach for the Stephen F. Austin men’s basketball team following the completion of one of the best playing careers in the nine-plus decade history of the program.
As the ‘Jacks’ graduate assistant coach, Pinkney will assist with film breakdown and exchange in addition to various scouting and coaching duties for the ‘Jacks.
Hailing from Katy, Texas, Pinkney wore a Stephen F. Austin men's basketball uniform from 2012-16 and helped transform the Lumberjacks from a run-of-the-mill mid-major team to one of the nation’s best. A point guard by trade, Pinkney came off the bench for all 32 of the ‘Jacks’ games as a freshmen, helping the team capture its first of four-straight Southland Conference regular season titles a 2012-13 campaign that culminated with SFA’s second trip to the NIT.
With Pinkney in charge as the starting point guard for all 103 games during his sophomore through senior seasons, the Lumberjacks produced college basketball’s third-best three-year stretch from 2013-16, going 89-14 through that span for a winning percentage of .864. In postseason play, Pinkney helped the ‘Jacks collect three consecutive Southland Conference Tournament crowns and finished his career with a 7-1 record in that tournament.
Those SLC Tournament titles served as the ‘Jacks’ tickets to three of the program’s four NCAA Tournament appearances. Pinkney helped the ‘Jacks secure the program’s two NCAA Tournament wins, too, including the largest 14-seed over three-seed victory in the history of the tournament when SFA bested West Virginia 70-56 on March 18, 2016.
By the time his career had wrapped up, Pinkney stood with teammate Thomas Walkup as the program’s winningest players with 106 victories. Additionally, he is one of only two players in program history to have dished out 400 or more assists in a career.
Pinkney graduated from Stephen F. Austin in December of 2015 and is currently pursing a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies at SFA.
