SFA graduate, former department student assistant to continue in Nacogdoches in full-time role
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin Assistant AD for Communications Jacob Pumphrey has announced the hiring of former student assistant Jason Madden to a full-time role as an assistant director of communications for the department. Madden, a recent May 2026 graduate of SFA with a BBA in Marketing and a minor in Sports Business, enters his fourth year as a member of the communications office.
"I am very excited for Jason to take over in this new role and to continue to produce quality work for the Jacks," noted Pumphrey. "His passion for SFA and his track record as a student assistant were just two of the many reasons why he's a perfect fit for this position. He's earned this opportunity and I look forward to seeing him continue to build upon the relationships he's created with our student-athletes, coaches and administrators, while helping us promote the Jacks and the department's championship culture."
Madden served as a student assistant in the athletic communications office for the past three years receiving daily hands-on experience in the day-to-day duties and gameday operations aspects of the department, while becoming a trusted and reliable worker.
"SFA has played a significant role in my professional development, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue my career here," remarked Madden. "I look forward to working alongside our coaches and student-athletes to share their stories, celebrate their achievements and contribute to the continued success of SFA Athletics. I am especially excited to join Amanda, Jacob and Jessica on the communications staff and collaborate with a group that is committed to telling the stories of our student-athletes and promoting the accomplishments of our programs."
This past athletic year, one that recently saw the Jacks win the Southland Conference Commissioner's Cup, Madden was elevated as the primary media relations contact for the women's soccer, women's tennis and women's golf programs, while serving as a secondary contact for SFA football and baseball and helping serve as a statistician for all SFA athletic programs.
Madden orchestrated the promotion of a pair of women's programs that were under first-year head coaches in soccer's Ashley Whittemore and tennis' Drew Lambert. Ladyjack soccer finished as runner-up in both the regular season and at the SLC tournament, while Ladyjack tennis won a second-straight SLC tournament title.
In his new role, the Kilgore, Texas native will continue to oversee the women's soccer, women's tennis and women's golf programs and serve as a secondary contact for SFA football, while also serving as the primary media relations contact for SFA women's basketball and baseball.
