Early hole too much to overcome for SFA
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Abilene Christian powered across five runs, including a first inning grand slam, over its first two trips to the plate to set the tone early on Wednesday night from Pilgrim's Park and late offense by Stephen F. Austin, a four-run frame in the eighth, was not enough in a 9-4 loss to the Wildcats in non-conference action. SFA's record moves to .500 at 13-13.
The Jacks accounted for seven hits with nearly half of those and all four runs coming in the eighth inning. SFA benefitted from walks to Mason Poppen and Brigden Smith, a leadoff double by Evan Aslaksen, RBI singles off the bats of Julian Swift and Ethan Peña and a fielder's choice RBI by Jackson Benattar in that frame.
The Wildcats cushioned the early 5-0 lead with two more runs in the fourth and single tallies in the fifth and ninth innings.
SFA tossed eight arms in the midweek affair seeing two innings from both Ayden Terry and Hayden Tronson. Tronson faced one over the minimum and fanned a pair, while Terry worked around a hit and two walks with two Ks in a scoreless six outs.
