Mulcahy, Vidlak combine for 13 strikeouts; Jacks score early, grab lead late to stave off sweep
HAMMOND, La. - Behind a pair of strong pitching efforts, early offense and a go-ahead run in the eighth inning, Stephen F. Austin staved off a Southland Conference sweep by earning a 3-2 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in the series finale from Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. The win moves SFA to 12-9 overall with a 5-4 record in SLC play. SLU drops to 11-9 and 4-2 in conference action.
A groundout by Mark Henning plated the game's first run as Cooper Schneider scored for an early 1-0 lead to back starter Dylan Mulcahy. The Jacks pushed a second tally across in the second inning on a second RBI groundout, this time from Cermodrick Bland, that plated Juan Cantua.
The Lions responded in the home half of the second inning with a pair of runs, one via groundout and the second on a single. Three of the Lions' eight hits were produced in the second inning. Mulcahy pitched a perfect third, tossed around a lead off single to third base in the fourth and worked around a one-out single to first base in the fifth as his five-inning effort resulted in six strikeouts, no walks and six hits with just one for extra bases.
Nate Vidlak took over for Mulcahy in the sixth inning and finished out the final four innings allowing just two hits and striking out four of the final seven batters he faced. In the eighth, the Jacks grabbed the lead as a single by Cantua moved runners, while a fielding error in left centerfield allowed Ethan Peña to advance an extra 90 and score from first base.
The lead was upheld as a two-out single in the SLU half of the ninth was left stranded as Vidlak punched out his seventh batter to pick up the win.
