Patrick leads with 20 points as SFA remains unbeaten at home at 13-0
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Four Lumberjacks finished in double-figure scoring, Stephen F. Austin withstood 33 and 10 from Lamar's Braden East and fended off the Cardinals late after dominating much of the contest on their way to a ninth-straight victory with an 84-74 decision on Saturday night inside William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Chrishawn Christmas delivered a thunderous putback dunk and Keon Thompson followed with a triple try on the next possession to push the Jacks' advantage to 20 points at 60-40 with just under 13 minutes left in the game.
Lamar responded and finished +10 in scoring the rest of the way as the Cardinals pulled within six points of the SFA lead with 33 seconds remaining. However, the Jacks put the Cardinals away at the stripe with a pair of makes from both Thompson and Lateef Patrick.
The Jacks utilized a near 60% effort from the floor in the first half knocking in half of their ten attempts from range with Kam Burton accounting for three including one from the near wing in the waning seconds of the first half that put the Jacks up a dozen at the intermission.
SFA overcame a three-plus minute scoring drought down through the under-8 media with Thompson ending the scoreless span with a drive to the paint to give the Jacks a 28-24 lead at the 6:45 mark. The Jacks were the first to 30 as Christmas operated along the baseline for a tough finish and in the process spark a 7-0 run which included a Patrick outlet to Christian Green who delivered a no-dribble helper to Narit Chotikavanic for a triple try to highlight the run which was part of a 16-8 closing effort by SFA to finish the first half.
