Traylor-Walker’s Double-Double, Kemp’s Steal & Score, Dominguez’s free throws late not enough for Ladyjacks
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Ashlyn Traylor-Walker delivered a double-double, Kaylinn Kemp recorded a late steal and score and Harmanie Dominguez notched a pair of free throws in the waning seconds, but East Texas A&M used the tenth bucket of a 23-point night from Tiani Ellison with three seconds left to overcome the Ladyjacks 65-64 on Thursday night inside William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Traylor-Walker scored 23 points and added 11 rebounds in nearly 30 minutes off the bench. Kemp added a dozen points with her final basket coming with 35 seconds left to give SFA a 62-61 lead. Dominguez connected on her only two attempts of the game from the stripe with less than ten seconds to play, but the Lions worked inside to Ellison who finished a tough look for the winning shot.
SFA led 54-43 after three quarters of play highlighted by a 12-2 run in the frame and led by seven points with just over four minutes left in the final stanza but the Lions engineered a 22-10 fourth quarter effort to steal a victory. East Texas A&M finished +17 in points off turnovers and delivered 42 points in the paint.
The Ladyjacks employed a stingy effort defending the perimeter forcing the Lions into an 0-for-6 effort from range in addition to a shooting clip of just 29% in the opening ten minutes of action. East Texas A&M trailed by just a bucket at the first quarter break and cut the deficit to a single point just prior to the 8-minute mark of the second quarter.
Dominguez hit a triple try to put SFA up 21-17 and SFA built a seven-point lead with the media stoppage looming as Traylor-Walker scored inside for the Ladyjacks' largest lead of the first half. ETAM cut the deficit to a single point twice after the under-5 media and took the lead with under a minute to play before Cha Gardner scored inside in the final ten seconds of the half to push the Ladyjacks back out front 35-34 at the intermission.
SFA knocked down half of its eight attempts from deep in the first half and held ETAM, which outscored SFA 21-20 in the second quarter, to just one make from range in nine attempts.
