Senior guard matches career-high scoring output as SFA holds off NSU for sixth-straight win
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Senior guard Keon Thompson matched his career-high scoring effort with 27 points and Stephen F. Austin used a fast start and managed to stay a step ahead of a surging Northwestern State squad to pull out a 69-67 Southland Conference victory on Tuesday afternoon inside the Sawmill. It's the sixth-straight win for SFA and the Jacks remain unbeaten at home at 10-0. The league-leading Jacks improve to 11-1 in Southland Conference play.
Jerald Colonel made an impressive hustle play along the SFA bench to save a possession heading out of bounds as the Jacks kept the ball leading 67-62 with less than 15 seconds to play. Colonel's effort ended up in the hands of Thompson who iced the contest with two makes at the line.
Earlier in the half, Colonel delivered a put back off a missed free throw and on the ensuing SFA possession, Narit Chotikavanic hit a three to put the Jacks up 51-40 with 13:45 remaining in the second half. Ten of Thompson's 14 second-half points came in the final twelve minutes as the Jacks worked through a three-plus minute field goal drought as Thompson scored inside to end the scoreless span.
The Jacks opened hot using an 11-1 run highlighted by an 8-0 effort over 2:30 minutes of action which was powered by a trio of successful triple tries. Of the three trifectas that found the bottom of the net was a deep Lateef Patrick attempt netted from the West Texas portion of SFA's midcourt Lone Star State logo.
Overall, it was a 15-2 advantage to open for the Lumberjacks, who defensively, held the visitors to just one field goal through the under-12 media stoppage.
The Demons battled back turning an 18-3 disadvantage into just a five-point deficit at the intermission as NSU looked to Chip Brunt who poured in 16 points in ten minutes off the bench. Northwestern matched the league's top rebounding team in the first half as each side pulled down 20 boards with the Demons edging SFA on the offensive glass, 6-5.
SFA made their first three attempts from range over the game's opening 1:58 of play but managed to sink just one more over the next 18+ minutes shooting 1-of-8 from beyond-the-arc in that span.
