NEW ORLEANS, La.- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Beach Volleyball Team (20-12, 5-3 SLC) travels to Louisiana to begin their Southland Conference Championship run, opening the tournament against the Houston Christian University Huskies (12-18, 4-4 SLC).
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks locked down the fourth seed in the Southland standings this season as they were able to experience consistent success regardless of where they played this year. The 'Jacks posted a perfect 6-0 home record, one of only four Southland teams to go undefeated at home, while their 11 neutral wins tied them for the second most of any Southland school this season. Meanwhile, SFA's 3-3 away record tied them with first seeded Boise State for the best away record among Southland schools this season, and the Lumberjacks 18 overall wins marked the second most wins in the Southland on the season. SFA will be led into the tournament by the pairings of Katie Hansen/Tessa Rogers as well as Kelly Johnson/Elaina Amador who all earned spots on the Southland Conference Beach Volleyball All-Conference Second Team. Hansen and Rogers compiled a 20-8 overall record playing in the first flight for SFA, while Johnson and Amador posted a 9-2 record in flight three for the Lumberjacks. SFA now turns their attention to the HCU Huskies looking to carry over their success from the regular season into the playoffs as they eye their first Southland Conference Championship in school history.
Huskies at a Glance:
The HCU Huskies conclude the regular season as the fifth overall seed after a season that saw the Huskies compile a 12-18 overall record, and a 4-4 conference record. The Huskies posted a 3-1 home record, 0-6 away record, and 9-11 neutral record this season HCU competed in the Fight in the Fort Tournament to end their regular season where they recorded a win over ULM, however, had touch matchups against second ranked TCU and 13th ranked GCU, as they look to get back in the win column in the opening round against SFA.
Series:
The first-round matchup between SFA and HCU will see these two Southland foes butt heads for the 12th all-time meeting, with HCU leading the series 7-4 to date. These two teams met earlier this season at the Southland Conference Mid-Season Event, where the Lumberjacks took home a 4-1 victory over the Huskies.
