12/31/2025 3:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Four Ladyjacks scored double digits, led by another new career high from Kaylinn Kemp.
NATCHITOCHES, La.- The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball program traveled across the Sabine River for a New Year's Eve matchup against the Lady Demons of Northwestern State.
Both teams struggled to get anything going offensively as the first basket of the game did not come until the 8:15 mark when Key Roseby made a layup and earned an and one to put SFA up 3-0. NSU responded with an 8-2 run to take an 8-5 lead. The Ladyjacks took the lead back off a layup from Aziyah Farrier, 9-8 with 2:00 left on the clock. Kaylinn Kemp made a driving layup with 44 seconds to secure an 11-10 lead. NSU made a buzzer beater half-court shot, but after review the ball was still in the offensive player's hands when the clock hit zero, so SFA went into the first quarter break with a one-point lead.
Both teams traded blows early in the second quarter, but back-to-back three pointers from the Lady Demons gave them a 21-16 forced an SFA timeout with 6:16 left in the first half. With 3:53 left in the second quarter, the Ladyjacks went on an 11-0 run that was capped off by a three-pointer for Harmanie Dominguez which is her 1,500th career point, 30-26. Kemp made the final basket of the first half for SFA with a driving layup with 47 seconds left to take a 32-28 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter, the Lady Demons got out to a hot start with a 5-0 spurt to retake the lead, 33-32. Both teams continued to trade baskets as neither team held more than a three-point lead until an and one from Aziyah Farrier put the Ladyjacks up four, 49-45 with 3:23 left in the third. NSU made a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one again, but neither team made a shot the last two minutes of the quarter, so SFA went into the fourth quarter with a 49-48 lead.
The back-and-forth affair continued in the final quarter until SFA went on a 12-2 run to take a commanding 66-56 lead with 5:05 left in the game. Six of those 12 points were scored by Myka Perry who exploded in the second half. The Ladyjacks consistently held a five to seven point lead the rest of the game and an explosive 27-point fourth quarter secured a 76-71 victory over the Lady Demons.
