‘Jacks Unable to Hold Off UTA in Arlington

SFA holds Mavericks without FG in final 5+ minutes, but host put game away at stripe
ARLINGTON, Texas – Despite a field goal scoring drought that lasted north of five minutes to close the game, UT Arlington managed to put away Stephen F. Austin at the free throw line on Saturday afternoon inside College Park Center as the Mavericks defeated the Lumberjacks 66-61 in a matchup of former WAC foes. SFA led by as much as ten points in the opening twenty minutes and carried a seven-point lead into the intermission but was outscored by a dozen points in the second half as UTA remained unbeaten in four tries at home.
A nifty move inside by Keon Thompson was rewarded by a spin-around dish from Gediminas Alisas as Thompson finished up and under to break the tie at 51, before counting the free throw moments after the harm initiated the under-8 media stoppage in the second half. Just prior to that bucket, Thompson assisted Alisas who bullied his way inside to match the game at 51.
SFA's lead following the Alisas to Thompson connection, at the 6:59 mark of the second half, was the last for the 'Jacks who led for nearly 28 minutes of action. Trailing 54-51, 11 of the Mavericks' final 15 points came from the stripe, while UTA's last field goal was a Ryan Seamster fast break lay-in that broke a 54-54 tie in a contest that featured just four ties, three in the second half, and nine lead changes.
In the same 5:11 of play that saw the Mavericks fail to convert from the floor, SFA committed four turnovers and was unable to see four attempts from range find the net.
SFA shot 47% in the first half to carry the advantage into the break, while matching the Mavericks in paint points and grabbing one more offensive rebound to finish at +1 in overall rebounding through the first twenty minutes.
