NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks baseball program named Philip Middleton to the coaching staff as the new associate head coach and pitching coach. Middleton comes to SFA after four seasons (2020-2024) as the head baseball coach at Texas A&M International in Laredo, Texas.
Philip brings over a decade of coaching experience to the SFA program, coaching at NCAA Division I, II, and III levels. He has a history of being a phenomenal recruiter and is excellent at developing talent shown by numerous All-Conference honorees, All-Region selections and conference Players of the Year.
"We are so excited to be able to bring coach Middleton and his wonderful family to Nacogdoches," said head coach Matt Vanderburg, "This was an integral hire for the future of Lumberjack baseball program and our pitching staff. Philip is a proven leader and will do an outstanding job developing our student-athletes into one of the best pitching staffs in the country. His vision aligns with the vision for the future of SFA baseball and I am extremely excited to hit the ground running with Philip. We have already started building a championship program at SFA."
Middleton spent time at Texas A&M Kingsville where he served as an assistant coach, recruiting coordinator, and pitching coach. Philip spent time at NCAA Division III Southwestern University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, as well as a graduate assistant coach at Sam Houston State University.
"My family and I are extremely excited to join Coach Vanderburg and the SFA baseball staff," said Middleton. "I'm grateful for this opportunity and would like to thank Matt and Michael McBroom for their leadership and vision for the SFA baseball program. Having competed against Coach Vanderburg's teams for the last 11 years, I've seen firsthand the commitment to excellence and winning tradition he brings with him to Nacogdoches. I look forward to helping build Lumberjack baseball into a Southland Conference championship caliber program for many years to come."
Middleton is a native of College Station, Texas and earned a bachelor's degree from Concordia University in Texas and a master's degree from Sam Houston State University.
Philp is married to his wife Sara, and they have one daughter, Sally and one son, Gus. The Middleton's are avid supporters of Christus Children's Hospital in San Antonio and Ronald McDonald House Charities to honor the memory of their late son, Peter.
