SEATTLE, Wash. - The Stephen F. Austin Softball team (9-28, 2-7) lost the series finale against the host Seattle University Redhawks (14-19, 6-3) as Seattle ended the series with a 6-2 win.
Aydenne Brown drew the starting nod in the circle for SFA while Nicola Simpon started for the Redhawks in the series finale. The Redhawks struck first in this one as they would score three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 3-0 lead. However, the Lumberjacks would respond in the top of the fourth as Lexi Benson would hit a one-out triple to left center field and later scored on an Emily Land single to cut the Redhawks lead to 3-1 heading to the bottom of the fourth. Seattle would add on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-1 lead heading to the fifth inning. That score would stand until the top of the seventh as SFA would try to mount a late rally against the Redhawks. Ellie Vance would send a one-out single to right field and later came around to score on an Alexis Teflord line drive double to right field to cut the Seattle lead to 6-2 in the seventh. Unfortunately for SFA, they were unable to find the equalizing runs and fell 6-2 to the Redhawks on Saturday afternoon.
The SFA lineup stayed busy today as six different batters recorded a hit for SFA today. Alexis Telford (1-3, 2B, RBI) and Lexi Benson (1-3, 3B, R) recorded extra-base hits for the 'Jacks as Telford recorded her second double of the season while Benson knocked her sixth triple of the campaign. Joining Telford and Benson in the hits column today were Kelby Robbins (1-3), Emily Land (1-3, RBI), Ellie Vance (1-3, R), and Mallory Webb (1-3). Robbins has now reached base in seven straight games, including recording a hit in six of her last seven contests, while Vance is now on a three-game hitting streak and has recorded a hit in seven of her last eight games. Meanwhile, Land and Webb have now recorded back-to-back games with hits while Mikaelah Burkland (0-2, BB) drew her eighth walk of the season.
Aydenne Brown struck out five hitters over six innings pitched and has now struck out at least five batters in four of her last five starts in the circle. Brittany Coe and Alexis Telford formed a dynamic defensive duo as the pair combined for 11 putouts, while Ellie Vance and Kelby Robbins recorded a pair of assists each defensively.
The Lumberjacks will get a little break before their next game as they will be back in action next Friday, April 5th when they open up a three-game home series against the visiting Tarleton State Texans.
