
SFA Battles UTA for a Spot in Round Three of WAC Tournament

LAS Vegas, Nevada- Stephen F. Austin will begin their second round of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championship tournament against the UT Arlington Mavericks on Thursday, March 14 at 10:30 p.m. CT in Las Vegas, NV. The winner of UTA and SFA will play Tarleton State at 10:30 p.m. CT, on Friday, March 15th.
A Look at SFA:
The Lumberjacks won 60-57 Wednesday night in another close battle against Abilene Christian University in round one of the WAC Vegas championship tournament. With nine seconds left on the clock, ACU's Airion Simmons drove the length of the court but had his game winning layup blocked by SFA's Chrishawn Christmas. Christmas gathered the rebound with 3.5 seconds remaining in the game and found Matt Hayman who then passed the ball up court to AJ Cajuste. Cajuste got rid of the ball just before the buzzer and sunk the game-winning three-pointer to grab a 60-57 win over ACU. It was Kyle Keller, and the Lumberjacks first win in the conference tournament since joining the WAC in 2021.
The Western Athletic Conference announced their final WAC men's basketball weekly awards of the season earlier this week. Stephen F. Austin's Nana Antwi-Boasiako received the honor after putting up a career high 30-point performance in SFA's 84-71 win over the Utah Tech Trailblazers.
In his coaching career, Keller has participated in 31 NCAA tournament games, and been a part of 21 tournament wins: One Final Four, three Elite 8's, and seven Sweet 16 games. He has 17 conference championships and led the 'Jacks to a 2021 Regular Season WAC Championship. Kyle Keller has also coached 21 All-Conference players.
Latrell Jossell is the Lumberjack's leading scorer with his 12.7 points per game. Jossell is shooting 39.6% from the field and 36.6% from the three-point line. He is coming off a 17-point game against the Abilene Christian Wildcats. He is ranked second in the conference with his 84.2 percent free throw percentage. He also recently hit the 100-steal and collected his 1,000-point career mark Wednesday night against ACUz.

The UT Arlington Mavericks enter the WAC Tournament with an 18-13 record overall and 13-7 in WAC play. They are riding a six-game winning streak that goes back to their 80-78 loss to Tarleton State. UTA received a first-round bye as they were ranked third in the conference.
In their 71-57 win over California Baptist in their regular season final game, UT Arlington's scoring was led by Makaih Williams' 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Aaron Cash (12), Dajuan Gordon (12), and Dwayne Koroma (10) also finished with double-digit scoring.
Phillip Russell is the Mavericks' leading scorer with 13.5 points per game. Dajuan Gordon (12.9), Shemar Wilson (11.8), and Makaih Williams (11.2) also average in double figures for UT Arlington.
