Jacks Drop Two on Day One of Bearkat Classic

HUNTSVILLE, Texas- Stephen F. Austin opened the 2024 season at the Bearkat Classic hosted by Sam Houston. SFA lost to Wichita State in a tight 7-4 game, and then immediately turned around and played UNLV but fell short in an 11-0 game.
Game 1: Wichita State 7, SFA 4
In the first game of the Jeff Jackson era, the Lumberjacks came out fighting against the Shockers. Down 3-0 entering the third inning, Madison Nguyen smoked a single into left field which drove in Kylie Bishop for the 'Jacks first run of the contest, 3-1. Brittany Coe entered the batter's box and hit a line drive to the gap in right center which cleared the bases and tied the game up at three. Wichita State tacked on a solo home run to take a slim 4-3 lead. In the fourth inning, Nguyen drove in her second run of the day off a grounder to second base which scored Mallory Webb to tie the game back up at four. The Shockers added another solo home run in the fourth and scored their final two runs in the fifth inning.
Kelby Robbins and Nguyen each recorded two hits, followed by Lexi Benson, Coe, and Webb who recorded one hit each. Nguyen and Coe each drove in two of SFA's runs with Nguyen, Webb, Bishop, and Dubose all touching home plate. Aydenne Brown started the game for the Lumberjacks and went 2.1 innings, and allowed two hits, four runs, four walks and recorded two strikeouts. Alexis Telford came in relief and pitched 3.2 innings, and allowed three hits, three runs, and recorded two strikeouts.
Game 2: UNLV 11, SFA 0 (Five Innings)
The 'Jacks faced a quick turnaround as they began their second game of the tournament in doubleheader fashion. Brooke Gainous got the start on the mound for SFA in the second game. UNLV quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. The Rebels scored one run in the second and third innings, two in the fourth, and five in the fifth to institute the run-rule, 11-0.
SFA recorded one hit off the bat of Brittany Coe. Three pitchers made an appearance in this game. Gainous pitched 3.0 innings, allowed seven hits, four runs, three walks, and struck out one batter. Kayla Palomino pitched 1.1 innings, allowed four hits, five runs, and two walks. Delilah Robles pitched 0.1 innings, allowed one hit, two runs, and one walk.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. as they play UNLV and then Wichita State at 3:30 p.m.
