ABILENE, Texas. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Basketball Team (15-9, 9-4) will look to sweep the regular season series against the Abilene Christian Wildcats (11-11, 7-6) as they look to replicate the result from their first meeting when the 'Jacks claimed a double overtime thriller win over the 'Cats 89-82 at the Sawmill.
Ladyjacks at a Glance:
The Ladyjacks come into Saturday's match-up coming off a week-long break that could not have come at a better time for them. The Ladyjacks will travel to Abilene looking to snap a two-game losing skid after getting some much-needed rest following a four-game road trip. In their last game, the Ladyjacks fell 84-74 at home to the UTA Mavericks.
Kurstyn Harden continues to be downright unstoppable for opposing defenses as she posted her third straight game at least 20 points, finishing with 21 against the Mavericks to lead all Ladyjacks. Harden's day wasn't just about her superb scoring as she posted her sixth double-double of the season by pulling down a team-high 14 boards against UTA. Harden's six double-doubles are second most in the WAC behind only former Ladyjack Avery Brittingham who has eight, while Harden's eight 20-point games have her tied for second most in the WAC this season with Maddie Warren of Utah Tech. Kyla Deck provided a nice compliment to Harden's low post scoring, as Deck exploded for five triples against the Mavericks, second most in a game by any Ladyjack this season. Deck would finish the day with 17 points, three rebounds, two assists, and a steal as she did a little bit of everything against UTA. Tyler McCliment-Call stuffed the stat sheet last Saturday with a 15-point, seven-rebound, three assist, one steal afternoon while going a perfect 4/4 from the foul line. Mele Finau had no trouble dishing out assists last Saturday as she led the team with five assists, while Avery VanSickle continues to be a consistent three-point threat for SFA as she drained three triples in route to an 11-point performance.
The Ladyjacks three-point shooting was on full display against the Mavericks as they made double-digit three-pointers for the fourth time this season, finishing with ten against UTA. The strong free-throw shooting continued for SFA as they made 14 free-throws and have now shot over 70% from the charity stripe for the ninth straight game. Meanwhile, the Ladyjacks were crashing the boards all afternoon and made good use of their opportunities as they turned a season-high 23 offensive rebounds into 20 second chance points.
Kurstyn Harden's dominating offensive season is not going undetected as she currently ranks 34th in the nation in field goal percentage with a 55.04% mark for the season. Destini Lombard has teamed up to form a nice offensive duo with Harden as Lombard currently ranks 34th in the country in assist/turnover ratio sporting a solid 2.38 assist/turnover ratio for the campaign. Kyla Deck continues to be a nuisance for opposing ball handlers as she sits at 23rd in the nation in steals per game averaging 2.70 steals/game.
Wildcats at a Glance:
The ACU Wildcats close out a four-game home stand against SFA looking to end the home stand on an extremely high note as they are currently a perfect 3-0 on the homestand after winning two of the three games by double-digit points. The Wildcats can be a pesky team to beat at home as they currently sport a 9-3 home record for the season.
The Wildcats appeared to be well on their way to a third straight double-digit point win as they led by as many as 21 against the UTRGV Vaqueros in their last game, but had to stave off a furious rally from the Vaqueros as they escaped with a 76-69 home win to secure their third straight win. Addison Martin experienced a strong day of shooting for the 'Cats as she knocked down 11 field goals in the win to lead the team with 26 points, and falling just short of a double-double with nine rebounds. Bella Earle was, however, able to secure her fourth double-double of the season thanks to a 17-point, 10-rebound performance against UTRGV, while also leading the team in assists with three. Payton Hull rounded out the top three scorers for ACU as she finished with 13 points and a pair of assists. Emma Troxell posted a strong defensive game for ACU as she recorded five rebounds, while leading the team with three steals.
Payton Hull is the leader of the Wildcat offense as she averages 14.7 points/game for ACU while leading the team in steals with 32. Hull is no stranger to scoring loads of points as earlier this season, she exploded for a 34-point outburst against Navy back in November, which she then followed up by posting 31 points against conference rival UTA just three days later. Bella Earle plays both sides of the ball well for the Wildcats as she averages 12.4 points/contest, while leading the team in both rebounds (167) and rebounds/game (7.6).
Series: Saturday's game will mark the 19th time these two schools have squared off with each other as SFA has looked unbeatable against ACU lately as the Ladyjacks have won the last seven meetings between the two programs with SFA scoring at least 80 points in five of those eight matches.
