
SFA Caps off Home Stand with Win Over Utah Valley

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks ended their two-game losing streak with a 77-72 win over the Utah Valley Wolverines. SFA improved to 13-8 overall and 6-4 in Western Athletic Conference play. UVU fell to 9-11 overall and 4-5 in WAC play.
With :28 left on clock, Chrishawn Christmas came up with a clutch block, on a possession that could've kept the Wolverines within a possession. The Lumberjacks converted on their free throws down the stretch and held Utah Valley off to break their two-game losing streak.
The 'Jacks were outrebounded 7-1 through the first 3:30 of the first half. Latrell Jossell got the scoring started for SFA as he had four of the team's first six points. Stephen F. Austin would go on a 10-0 run to take a 15-12 lead with 9:23 remaining in the opening half.
The Lumberjacks entered halftime with an 11-point lead over the Wolverines. SFA held a 38-27 lead and was led by Latrell Jossell's 14-point first half performance. Jossell shot 4-for-6 (66.6%) from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
SFA's offense shot 14-for-31 (45.2%) from the field, 2-for-6 (33.3%) from the three-point line, and only tuned the ball over five times in the first half. Utah Valley shot 14-for-31 (45.2%) from the field and 3-for-8 (37.5%) from the field. The Lumberjacks forced 12 turnovers in the first half and had six steals. Chrishawn Christmas and Latrell Jossell both had two steals.
Jalil Beaubrun posted the first two buckets of the second half for SFA. The Wolverines went on an 8-0 run to close the Lumberjack's lead to 44-42 with 15:17 remaining in the second half. SFA was outscored 45-39 in the second half but was able to hang on for their sixth conference win.
Jalil Beaubrun was named Pilgrim's Player of the Game and finished as the game's leading scorer with a career high 22 points. He finished the game with two steals, eight rebounds, and shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Matt Hayman (14) and Latrell Jossell (19) also finished in double-digit scoring for SFA.
The Lumberjacks were 25-for-56 (44.6%) from the field and 5-for-15 (33.3%) from three. SFA's defense forced 16 turnovers and had 10 steals. Latrell Jossell had three steals for the 'Jacks. Matt Hayman, Chrishawn Christmas, and Jalil Beaubrun all finished with two steals.
The Lumberjacks will be back on the road for the first time in four games. However, they won't be leaving the State of Texas as they'll be traveling down the road to face the Tarleton Texans on Saturday, February 3rd in a 6:30 p.m. game. The last matchup between the Texans and Lumberjacks came earlier this season and resulted in a 68-66 loss for the 'Jacks at home.
