Lumberjacks Snap Losing Skid with Win over Grambling State

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin defeated Grambling State University 11-6 to break their four-game losing streak. The 'Jacks improve to 20-23 as the Tigers fall to 21-22.

Jason Gonzalez got the call to start on the mound today for the Lumberjacks and opened the game with three scoreless frames. After going four innings and only allowing one earned run, Gonzalez got his first win of the season.

The Lumberjacks struck first in a big way in the bottom of the third, putting six runs up on the board in the inning. The 'Jacks first run came when a throwing error from the shortstop on a Julian Thompson infield single allowed Tyree Carr to score from third. Nolan Brown later stepped up and drove in Thompson with a monster double off the center field wall. Cole Hill took advantage of a bases-loaded situation with a two-run single to left field. Barrett Rose followed with a sacrifice fly to right field and Sam Adams closed out the rally with a RBI double of his own to left center.

Grambling State was able to cut the lead in the half by scoring two in the fourth and one in the fifth, but the 'Jacks responded in the bottom of the fifth with two runs off an RBI double from Carr and an RBI groundout from Thompson.

The 'Jacks built on their lead in the following innings, first by executing a double steal in the sixth. With runners on the corners, Hill went second base and as the throw was going down to second, Brown broke for home from third and beat the throw back to the catcher. In the seventh inning, Scout Sanders was able to take advantage of a wild pitch and score from third base. A few batters later, Brown hit an RBI single up the middle to give the Lumberjacks a comfortable 11-3 lead.

The Tigers were able to put some runs on the board in the final inning off of three hits, but the Lumberjacks were able to close out the deal in the end to win their 20th game of the year.

Brown, Carr, and Thompson all had a productive day at the plate today, each picking up two hits and at least one run and one RBI. Hill was also able to go 1-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs, and a walk in his at-bats.

The Lumberjacks now look forward to their next WAC series which will be in Orem, Utah against Utah Valley University. First game being Friday, May 5th at 7:05 p.m.
