NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Ladyjacks look to bring home SFA's third NCAA National Title in program history.
SFA was awarded one of eight at-large berths to the 2023 NCAA Bowling Championship. Action will start against #11 Duquesne in the opening round of the Pittsburgh Region of the 17-team championship on April 7 at AMF Mt. Lebanon Lanes in Pittsburgh. Fourth-seeded and #3 nationally ranked Nebraska and #14 Mercyhurst round out the region.
With the at-large birth, SFA Bowling becomes the third team to represent Nacogdoches on the national stage during the 2022-23 season, and the second NCAA Tournament appearance for SFA Athletics this season, joining SFA Volleyball.
The 2023 championship playoff format involves 17 teams playing in groups of four (with five teams competing in Arlington which will open on April 6) at the following regional sites: Pittsburgh, Pa., Rochester, N.Y., Lansing, Mich. and Arlington, Texas on April 7-8. Winners of the four regionals will advance to the championship final which will be held at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nev. on April 14-15.
Each match of the double-elimination tournament (not including the play-in), other than the if-necessary regional final match and championship final match, will consist of teams competing in a best-of-three match format, bowled as follows: five-person team match, Baker total pinfall and best-of-seven Baker match play.
Any 'if-necessary' regional final match and the championship final match will be best-of-seven Baker match play.
Last Time Out
During last years run during the national tournament, SFA was seeded #9 overall in the Arlington Region. They would take on the likes of #4 Sam Houston, #7 NC A&T, and #6 Louisiana Tech, going undefeated in the region and heading to the Final Four on a hot streak.
Taking down #1 McKendree and #3 Vanderbilt both in 2-1 matches, SFA would fall just short in the National Championship and finished as runner ups. All of last years roster returns with three freshman to try and earn the program's third national title.
