
SFA Wins Cayman Island Classic Opener 86-76

George Town, CAYMAN ISLAND- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (3-1, 0-0) got things started off right at the Cayman Island Classic with their bout against the Loyola Marymount Lions (2-2, 0-0). SFA won the contest 86-76.
The Lumberjack offense had trouble finding the bottom of the net through the first few minutes. Jalil Beaubrun got the scoring started for SFA as Latrell Jossell found him for the open layup making the score 8-2 with 16:37 remaining in the opening half.
Halfway through the first twenty minutes the 'Jacks found themselves down 23-12. Chrishawn Christmas was the offensive force that SFA needed in the first half. Christmas was active in the paint, beyond the three-point line, and was a vital piece on the 'Jacks transition offense.
With :28 seconds in the opening half Frank Staine's two free throws pulled SFA to within four points of the Lions which was their smallest deficit since the start of the game. At the end of twenty minutes the Lumberjacks trailed LMU 39-33.
SFA trailed through most of the second half, but AJ Cajuste caught fire and helped lead the 'Jacks back from their first half deficit. With 11:54 remaining Cajuste hit a jumper that would tie the game 51-51. Frank Staine would follow up the bucket with a steal and a jumper that gave SFA their first lead 53-51.
Staine, Jalil Beaubrun, and Matt Hayman all contributed to the barrage of threes that gave SFA their game clinching lead. AJ Cajuste would ice things away for the 'Jacks at the free throw line as he finished the day 11-for-12 from the stripe.
SFA outscored the Lions in the second half 53-37 and axed the Lions 86-76 to win their first game of the Cayman Island Classic. The 'Jacks scoring was led by AJ Cajuste who finished 7-for-12 with 25 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Latrell Jossell was SFA's second leading scorer as he went 3-for-6 from behind the arc and contributed 11 points.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. against the Drake Bulldogs. Drake took an 85-77 victory over Oakland today to advance to the second round of the Cayman Island Classic.
